During the family and child sessions, I prefer to let the children lead the session, capturing their natural interest, curiosity, humor—even their frustrations—throughout the shoot. I have found that this allows me to capture images that are much more relaxed and in poses that are much more natural.
Whenever possible, I work with natural light in the studio and at locations such as Monponsett Inn in Halifax, War Memorial Park in West Bridgewater, Veterans’ Memorial Park in Marshfield, Hidden Pond in Hingham, and Nelson Memorial Park in Plymouth. Why do I prefer natural light? Sunlight is a softer light, and at sunrise or sunset, it adds a nice warm sunflower/rose-colored glow to the images. When I use natural light to illuminate my subjects as a backlight, it creates a beautiful touch of light on the hair, or, when indented, could be used as sun flares. My studio has a wall of windows to allow the natural light to enter, and I’ll use a flash to counter shadows.
